Extraordinary photo exhibits on the movie screen in 4K

After 20 years of creative work and nearly 50 independent exhibitions, I have found the ideal format to display my pictures. Out of what are considered my most significant photographs, I have prepared five full-length musical slideshows to be screened in cinemas. From my experiences with projecting, I find that a movie slideshow production is in many ways more exciting than a traditional photo exhibit.

STILL MOVIES

STORIES UNFOLD IN BLACK-AND-WHITE PICTURES

From pulsing Cuban streets to peaceful Norwegian islanders, from a dried-out lake in Hungary to the barren peaks of Mt. Etna

I trained to become a cinematographer for a long time. Perhaps that is why, to this day, I still have the urge to smuggle complete narratives into my photos. Thus, it is practically irrelevant where I am; what is essential is where my mind happens to be wandering. The Still Movies slideshow consists of eight chapters: Silent Stills, Sleep of Reason, Pilgrims, Ocean of Sighs – Cuba, Arab World, Townfolks, Hungary, and Mediterranean. We travel half the world, but more importantly, we construct that of our own! Of the five slide shows, this one uses the most black-and-white.

Unintended Light

A LYRICAL AND IMAGINATIVE JOURNEY WITH GUSTAV MAHLER’S STIRRING SYMPHONIC WORKS

How moving that the Sun blesses us with infinite energy and light; make of it what we will. Free of intention, limitation, or precondition, this gift is granted to us, and anyone may use it for any purpose. For the most part, we neglect to give this entire phenomenon its proper due. Yet, for a photographer, light, the protagonist of this series, is of vital importance. At the same time, it brings shadow into existence, often emphasizing the absence of light – an inescapable duality of earthly existence, which also serves as the source of all trouble. I have woven this slideshow out of scenes of our lives – vacillating between the intentional and unintentional, seemingly insignificant and yet capable of great significance. It is my conviction that recognitions such as these can shed light upon the ungraspable essence, or precisely the potentials of our lives, providing snapshots of our coming fate.

Between Nothingness and Eternity

THE ENCOUNTER OF PHOTOS IN COLOR AND BLACK-AND-WHITE

with essential thoughts from Emil Cioran’s philosophy

“It is impossible to live without ascribing significance to objects with no significance at all,” said Emil Cioran, with whom I profoundly agree. In this slide show (through 12 chapters, which pose 12 cardinal questions), I relate through my pictures how I have managed to ascribe significance to everything in my life, and also, in the course of my journeys, what different crucial interrelations I have come across in human situations, landscapes, and light relations that at first perhaps seem inconsequential. I strive to present these miniscule vibrations that day by day make our human lives colourful, changeable, joyous or melancholy, but by all means complete.

LANDSLIDES – EXPLORING THE VOID

A MYSTICAL JOURNEY INTO THE FOREST’S WORLD – AN INTERNAL EXPERIENCE OF SELF-ENCOUNTER

In recent years, making visible the quietly existing, yet invisible soul of forests has become a main preoccupation of mine. I am not a nature photographer; I do not photograph trees or birds; still, with their aid, I strive to present a co-existing, yet intangible world. The task is not so difficult; the pictures practically take themselves. Often I feel that they find me. With 20 years’ experience of street photography behind me, I have unexpectedly discovered a mystical world — far from my accustomed “territories” as a photographer — which has no direct links to my earlier artistic style; still it feeds off it. I consider the Landslides project to be my most exciting undertaking so far. The result of long exposure times and the musical accompaniment reward both spectators and artist with an incomparable experience and tranquility. While similar to guided meditation or hypnosis, Landslides only transports viewers as far as they are willing to travel with it.

ZOLTAN’S WORLD | THE PETER GABRIEL SLIDESHOW

WHEN THE WORLD OF A MUSICIAN AND A PHOTOGRAPHER’S PICTORIAL WORLD MEET

I have tried to present – like a tribute before the world-famous musician – how a songwriter’s auditory world and my own visual world are inextricably linked within me. When Peter Gabriel makes music – with lyrics or instrumentally – I respond in the language of pictures. Gabriel’s music also played a decisive role in the dramaturgical rendering of the 245 photos that comprise this slideshow.

"I find Zoltán’s pictures so exciting that I would gladly get to know this promising artist personally as well."
Krzysztof Zanussi, film director

As a photographer, I strive to create pictures that stimulate the viewer’s imagination beyond the first viewing. I never take staged photos. I would rather enjoy the randomness of reality, the infinite wonder of it, and my ability to convey this through an objective means, through photography. In my view, art does not express an opinion of reality; instead, it ponders it.

Every time that I place my finger on the exposure button, I ask myself unsparingly, “Does this truly bring an important new thought to the world, what is born with the press of the button? Is it worthwhile sacrificing my time to become involved with this emerging picture? Is there a mentality, a message contained in this potential work of art which could be of use to the picture’s prospective viewers? Is it worth adding another grain of sand to the desert?” If the answer to all of these is “yes!”, only then do I decide to expose.

Then the difficulties begin! From then on, it is my obligation to assist the piece coming to life, so it can reach viewers and live a new life in them.

In today’s endless flood of pictures, it is practically an impossible undertaking to believe in a new picture’s right to exist. Moreover, as an artist, I must recognise that people today do not consider taking in art to be a vital necessity. Still, I would state that art has a future. Perhaps humanity will become disenchanted with the illusions caused by technological advances, and they will take a fresh look at sincere works of art which, with their quiet strength, actually serve to nourish the soul.

With my slideshows, I offer a sort of solace, an opportunity to climb out of the everyday monotony. I hope that what I present will be a remarkably useful contribution to someone, something that will make even the greatest crisis relatively easy to bear. At the same time, the greatest of triumphs do not go to my head.

I am also aware that, in the world of photograph now, philosophical thoughts are none to fashionable. They do not bring the works spectacular praise. Much rather, it is the quiet accompaniment to a lifestyle in a continuous process of creation and observation. No other dazzling success can hold a candle to the freedom it affords.

For me, every spectator’s presence at my projections is a great joy. They become my companions on this amazing journey – indeed, right now, when I can finally display my works in a complex fashion and with an impeccable quality I had not dared to dream of previously.

I hope we will have an opportunity to meet, maybe at several screenings!
